Compliance & Environment

Environment

Being part of an industry that uses large quantities of timber we are very conscious of our environmental stand point and policy. Over the past few years we have increased and changed our internal policy to become more ‘green’ and efficient.

Sourcing Timber
Timber merchants across the UK and Europe are heavily regulated to adhere to many environmental international policies. Our suppliers are, FSC (Forestry Stewardship) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) accredited which means that all timber is used from sustainable forests.

We only use timber merchants that provide Heat Treated timber. We in turn are ISMP15 (International Standards For Phytosanitary Measures No. 15) certified by Timcon, who regulate the market at governing ISPM15 certificates.

Waste Disposal
All timber waste is recycled as much as possible and we have a target to reduce our landfill waste by 75% by 2024.

• Cut-offs are used to re-heat our factory operation which results in a lower requirement for Electricity and Gas reducing our carbon footprint.
• Excess timber is re-used in the local community to heat homes through the use of home wood burners.
• Sawdust is extracted and provided FOC to local farms.

All other waste is disposed by one of the leading waste management companies in the North West – Kenny Waste Management. Our excess waste of what we cannot re-use is further recycled to divert from Landfill as much as possible. We have access to online reports which enable us to provide more detailed information on our wastage if required.

Carbon Foot Print Reduction
Carbon footprint reduction is important for us as a business and important for you as a customer. Your carbon footprint is the annual amount of greenhouse gas emissions, mainly carbon dioxide, that result from the activities of an individual or a group of people. The carbon footprint can also be calculated for an event, a process, or providing a product, such as a Timber Case.

Whilst we have taken measures to reduce our carbon footprint, using timber for export packing is an excellent way to reduce your carbon footprint opposed to using plastic and metal. Timber naturally reduces the amount of carbon in the atmosphere by holding it within. Using Timber cases thus inherently reduces your packaging carbon foot print to export your products internationally.

Compliance and Accreditation’s

All Woodlands Timber Packaging timber cases and crates are supplied in accordance to the Forestry Commission and the ISPM15 compliance governed by Timcon. Timcon are a Timber Packaging and Timber Pallet Confederation that regulate the market in the UK. They ensure that all companies that use timber for export are fully accredited and adhere to EU regulations in the UK. They ensure that all Timber that is sourced from multiple suppliers across the Uk and Europe is ISPM15 compliant. At Woodlands, we source our timber from multiple suppliers across the Uk and Europe from environmentally friendly forests.

The International Standards For Phytosanitary Measures No. 15 (ISPM15) is a measure developed by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC). The regulation was developed to help prevent the international transport and spread of disease and insects that could negatively affect plants or ecosystems globally.

All ISPM15 timber is debarked, then heat treated or fumigated with methyl bromide to ensure no insects or diseases are spread whilst being exported.

In order to export products using timber packaging to countries outside of the EU, ISPM15 regulations are required. The mark of compliance is branded onto each side of our timber cases/crates to ensure they are clearly visible import and export officials internationally.

In addition to the branding of the ISPM15 cases we also provide our clients with the necessary paperwork and certificate to accompany them in transit. Our relationship with Timcon also means that on the rare occasion that there is problems with import officials, Timcon can directly help ourselves and our clients.

We work in accordance to the British Standard BS 1133 which is the Packaging Code Guidance for wooden boxes, cases and crates.
